A working operator stopped waiting for better tools.
Serious work has requirements tools often skip: context that survives handoffs, human judgment at consequential moments, privacy across the full data path, and proof of what actually happened.
In February 2022, Bud began building AI-assisted workflows to support day-to-day legal work. Each useful fix exposed another missing layer. Better knowledge needed workflow. Workflow needed review. Agents needed boundaries. The work grew from individual tools into connected systems.
Why a family appeared
One feature was never going to solve an operating system of work.
The systems accumulated because the problems were connected—not because a roadmap demanded a logo wall.

He builds from the operator’s seat: name the friction, design the smallest useful system, keep consequential judgment human, and leave the people who own the work with a system they understand. The work began inside an active practice. ShepBuild came later, when the systems needed a coherent home.
